2024 Syllabus - Musical Theatre

It is the responsibility of every Competitor and/or Parent/Guardian and/or Teacher to ensure that they have read and complied with the current Syllabus and all the rules and regulations governing the Barrie Kiwanis Music Festival.

Prior to registering, we invite you to read the FAQ's.

In classes where age limit is specified, competitors must be the prescribed age or under as of December 31st of the previous year and must state their age on the online registration form.

MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES:

a) Stage movement is allowed, but no dance breaks.
b) Two (2) simple handheld props (e.g. comb, basket, or book); one (1) standard rehearsal theatre box, one table and one chair are allowed. No other props will be permitted.
c) Costumes are allowed but will not be judged.
d) Spoken passages are only allowed if published in the score being used and cannot represent more than 10% of the selection.
Selections that are primarily spoken patter, e.g. Ya Got Trouble (from The Music Man) and Aaron Burr, Sir (from Hamilton) are not permitted.
e) Selections from STAGED Disney Productions in all categories. Competitors must use the versions of songs as shown in the production book/score and not arrangements or Junior show versions. Selections from any Animated Musicals (Disney or otherwise, can only be entered in the specified Ballad and Up-Tempo categories specifically created for them).
e) Selections should be age appropriate. BKMF reserves the right to reject any selections that are deemed inappropriate, either in style or content.
f) All criteria listed in the BKMF General Rules must be strictly adhered to.
Performances must be from memory.
Competitors must perform selections from professional Musical Theatre fully staged productions. Musicals that have only been workshopped are NOT permitted.

Musical Theatre Selections from 1943-1974 - Ballad

Ballad. Any voice. Own choice from staged musicals between 1943 - 1974. Composers such as, but not limited to, Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Lerner and Loewe, Herman, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Early Sondheim etc. Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry.

ADJUDICATION PLUS categories will include an opportunity for each competitor to return to the stage and work with the adjudicator 1:1 for 10-20 min (level dependent) to receive immediate feedback on incorporating some of the adjudicator's suggestions.

Musical Theatre Selections from 1943-1974 - Up-Tempo

Up-Tempo. Any voice. Own choice from staged musicals between 1943-1974. Composers such as, but not limited to, Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Lerner and Loewe, Herman, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Early Sondheim etc. Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry.

Composers such as Jason Robert Brown, Finn, Kander and Ebb, Lloyd Webber, Sondheim etc. Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry.

Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry.

Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with different combinations of partners and repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry. Competitors must enter the class according to the age of the oldest in the duet.

ADJUDICATION PLUS categories will include an opportunity for each competitor to return to the stage and work with the adjudicator 1:1 for 10-20 min (level dependent) to receive immediate feedback on incorporating some of the adjudicator's suggestions.

Musical Theatre Student Duets - Up-Tempo

Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with different combinations of partners and repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry. Competitors must enter the class according to the age of the oldest in the duet.

Musical Theatre Student Trios - Up-Tempo

Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with different combinations of partners and repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry. Competitors must enter the class according to the age of the oldest in the trio.

Musical Theatre Ensembles (4 - 15 members) - Ballad

Ballad. Own choice of repertoire. Any combination of ages and voices. Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with different combinations of singers and repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry. Competitors must enter the class according to the AVERAGE age of the ensemble. Please add all ages at December 31, 2022 and divide by number of performers.

ADJUDICATION PLUS categories will include an opportunity for each competitor to return to the stage and work with the adjudicator 1:1 for 10-20 min (level dependent) to receive immediate feedback on incorporating some of the adjudicator's suggestions.

Musical Theatre Ensembles (4 - 15 members) - Up-Tempo

Up-Tempo. Own choice of repertoire. Any combination of ages and voices. Competitors may enter these classes multiple times with different combinations of singers and repertoire that has not been previously performed in the Festival, but a separate registration is required for each entry. Competitors must enter the class according to the AVERAGE age of the ensemble. Please add all ages at December 31, 2022 and divide by number of performers.
